State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced that more than 4,000 tires—totaling roughly 39 tons—were disposed of recently at two free disposal events held in St. Lawrence County.
Hosted in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Solid Waste Department, the waste tire drop off events were held in Waddington and Hammond and were aimed at helping to clean up our region and reduce risks to public health, as waste tires can act as breeding ground for disease carrying mosquitoes.
“By giving people the opportunity to get rid of waste tires for free, we’re not only collectively tidying up our region, we’re also stopping the spread of deadly diseases and preventing the pollution that can occur when tires are disposed of improperly,” said Senator Ritchie.
“I’d like to thank the many people who took the time to visit my free drop offs, as well as the St. Lawrence County Solid Waste Department for their efforts in making the events such a success.”
Made possible by special funding secured by Senator Ritchie, the free disposal events are part of a continuing effort to clean up our region and stop the spread of disease. In recent years, residents in Central and Northern New York have eliminated nearly 600 tons of tires through her free recycling events.
