$15 Drop-Off Fee to be Waived at Events in St. Lawrence County on April 25th and May 9th
State Senator Patty Ritchie is encouraging North Country residents to take the weekend to collect waste tires to be disposed of at her “Free Tire Drop-Off “ events taking place in St. Lawrence County on April 25th and May 9th.
The free events are being made possible with special funding Senator Ritchie secured in the State Budget, and are being hosted in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Highway Department in an effort to clean up the county, protect the environment and reduce the spreading of illnesses by eliminating tires that can act as breeding ground for disease-carrying insects.
“Many people don’t realize that waste tires aren’t just unsightly—they’re a danger to public health,” said Senator Ritchie.
“One waste tire can act as breeding ground for up to one million disease-carrying mosquitoes. In addition, improper disposal of waste tires—through actions such as burning them—releases harmful, toxic chemicals into the air. That’s why I’m encouraging people throughout St. Lawrence County to spend time this weekend collecting waste tires to be disposed of at my free events on.”
The upcoming tire drop-offs build upon the Senator’s past efforts to clean up our region and protect the public health, as well as the environment. In the past two years, she has hosted similar events in St. Lawrence and Oswego Counties, where a total of nearly 12,000 tires were disposed of.
Waste tires will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the following locations:
Saturday April 25th:
- Canton Human Services Parking Lot, located at 80 State Highway 310
- Massena Transfer Station, located at 49 Dump Road (off of State Route 420)
Saturday May 9th:
- Gouverneur Transfer Station, located at 1831 State Highway 11
- Ogdensburg Transfer Station, located at 522 County Route 28A
Each household will be permitted to dispose of up to eight tires, up to 44 inches in diameter each, with the usual $15 fee being waived. Please note tractor tires will not be accepted.
