Black and Hispanic Ministers, Jewish and Catholic Leaders to Kickoff New York’s Parental Choice in Education Campaign

Black and Hispanic Evangelical Clergy, Jewish Rabbis and Catholic Clergy have joined together to support Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Parental Choice in Education Act, and will unite for a Kickoff Rally tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 4PM on the corner of East 149th Street and Third Avenue in Bronx County.
Even though they have not yet confirmed their participation, Senator Díaz stated that he has extended an invitation to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and Cardinal Timothy Dolan due to the fact that they both are the major proponents of this legislation.

The rally has been organized by State Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz, Reverend Dr. Johnnie M. Green, Pastor of Mount Neboh Baptist Church of Harlem and Leader of Mobilizing Preachers and Communities, Reverend Patrick Young, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of East Elmhurst, Bishop Orlando Findlayter, of New Hope Christian Church in Brooklyn, and Ministers from the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization.

According to the organizers: “After our June 4th Kickoff Campaign in the Streets, we will bring that same message to our Churches on Sunday.  We will let our church members and their families and friends know about what we are doing for our children, how we can help our children, and what they need to do to help them. We will let our churches know how important it is for them to speak out and send this message to their Assemblymembers: the Parental Choice in Education Act is for our community and needs to be passed and signed into law.”

The Black and Hispanic Ministers who represent more than 300 Churches in the City have joined forces with Catholic and Jewish leaders in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Parental Choice in Education Act.  If approved by the legislature, this tax credit initiative will help low and middle income families who send their children to public and nonpublic schools and will provide scholarships so parents can send their children to the school of their choice. The Parental Choice in Education Act will offer incentives to public schools for enhanced educational programming - like afterschool programs, and it will offer tax credits to public school teachers for the purchase of supplies.
