Bill to Create Comprehensive Program Database Passes Both Houses

ALBANY, NY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) and Assemblyman Steve Cymbrowitz (D—Brooklyn), Chairs of the Senate and Assembly Committees on Aging, announced that their bill to create a program database for individuals suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease has passed both Houses.

Serino, a freshman Senator from Hyde Park, noted the bill’s significance saying, “Living with Alzheimer’s and dementia — and caring for family members that are suffering from the debilitating symptoms — is challenging enough without the added stress of trying to track down critical resources. Information is power and as the Aging Chair, my goal is to empower New York seniors. I am proud to see a bill pass that has the potential to actively improve the quality of life for seniors and their families.” 

“Thanks to this legislation and the database it creates, groups that provide assistance to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients will be able to replicate successful programming models that are being used anywhere in New York State,” Assemblyman Cymbrowitz said. “This is a case where access to information and the sharing of cutting-edge ideas will benefit thousands of patients and their families.”

Specifically, the bill (S. 3968), will create an easily identified and comprehensive program database on the State Office for the Aging website with up-to-date and carefully vetted information on program, methodologies, and services provided statewide for persons suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease and their caretakers.

The goal of the database is to put important tools and resources directly at the fingertips of the people who need it most—patients and their caregivers.

Having passed in the Senate earlier this month and now having passed in the Assembly, the bill will be sent to the Governor to be signed into law.
