SENATOR SUE SERINO AND DUTCHESS COUNTY CLERK BRAD KENDALL HIGHLIGHT REFUND FOR VETS
HYDE PARK, NY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) and Dutchess County Clerk Bradford Kendall announced today that any veteran who paid a fee to receive a distinguishing mark on their driver’s license or ID after October 2012 will be eligible for a reimbursement.
Last year, a bill was signed into law suspending the fee for veterans to receive a special indicator on their DMV documents, but veterans had been paying the fee since October 2012. This new measure makes the effective date of that law retroactive, so those who paid the fee since that time will be eligible for reimbursement. The bill was championed by County Clerks and veteran advocates across the state, passed both houses of the Legislature earlier this year and was signed into law in August.
“Our veterans have fought for our country and they deserve the opportunity to proudly display the status of that service free of charge,” said Senator Serino. “Our local County Clerk, Brad Kendall, was instrumental in building support for this measure and I thank all involved for making the initiative a priority. Every little bit counts when it comes to showing our gratitude to our veterans.”
County Clerk Kendall stated, “Thanks to one and all who worked tirelessly advocating on behalf of veterans across the state. Championing these efforts is a positive change and the Dutchess County Clerk’s Office is pleased to serve the brave men and women, who have so honorably protected our rights and freedoms.”
According to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, each eligible customer will get a letter and a refund check from the state automatically. For more information, please visit http://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/veteran-status-designation-photo-document.
