Senator Sue Serino Votes in Favor of Women’s Equality

Historic Women’s Equality Agenda Passes in Senate

 
ALBANY—Senator Sue Serino (R—Hyde Park) announced today that with her vote in favor, the historic Women’s Equality Agenda passed in the New York State Senate. The consideration of the Agenda’s eight bills marks the first legislative act of the 2015 Legislative Session.

“The passing of the Women’s Equality Agenda today sends a strong message that the NYS Senate stands ready to put people ahead of politics and to prioritize the needs of New York’s women,” said Senator Serino. “I am proud to say that my first Legislative Act as a State Senator will go a long way in empowering women and breaking down barriers to real progress.”

The comprehensive legislation supported by Serino aims to put a stop to human trafficking; ensure equal pay for equal work; combat sexual harassment in the workplace; end gender discrimination in employment, housing and credit decisions; make reasonable work accommodations available for pregnant women; and provide stronger protections for domestic violence victims.

The Senate passed all eight of the bills making up the Women’s Equality Agenda in both 2013 and 2014, but they were not acted upon in either year by the Assembly.

“I urge my colleagues in the Assembly to join us in acting on this critical Agenda so that it may finally become law,” continued Serino. “New York’s women have waited long enough.”
