YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, NY - Dr. Terrence Murphy, the newly-elected State Senator for the 40th District, was officially sworn in as a member of the New York State Senate on Thursday. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Yorktown Stage, in his hometown of Yorktown.
Over six hundred local residents were in attendance to see now-Senator Murphy take the oath of office in front of Appellate Court Justice Mark Dillon, a former Yorktown Town Judge. Numerous elected officials were also present.
Murphy delivered remarks during the event, thanking supporters and labor groups who aided his candidacy. The Senator set forth an agenda of making the tax cap permanent, passing a property tax circuit breaker and serious unfunded mandate relief for local governments.
He also spoke about working across party lines to pass ethics reform, win the war on heroin and called for the death penalty for anyone who kills a first responder. During the speech, Murphy singled out the Uniformed Fire Officers Association for special recognition, for all that they had done for his campaign.
In Albany next week, Murphy will take a ceremonial oath of office administered by Jonathan Lippman, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, before the first legislative session of 2015. He also announced two temporary office locations that will house his staff until permanent locations are announced.
New York's 40th District includes the towns of Beekman, Pawling and the village of Pawling in Dutchess County, the towns of Carmel, Patterson and Southeast, and the village of Brewster in Putnam County, and the city of Peekskill, the towns of Cortlandt, Lewisboro, Mount Pleasant, New Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers and Yorktown, the town/village of Mount Kisco, and the villages of Briarcliff Manor, Buchanan, Croton-on-Hudson, Pleasantville and Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County.
