ALBANY, NY - Senator Terrence P. Murphy issued the following statement responding to the announcement that New York City is rolling out the use of Municipal ID cards.
"Mayor de Blasio is turning his back on law enforcement again with this disastrous, not to mention dangerous, program which will only encourage more fraud and deceit at the hands of New York's hardworking taxpayers and legal immigrants. Incentivizing law breaking is the wrong way to go and the State could put a stop to this."
"The 9/11 terrorists were not interested in using their myriad false documents to get free museum admission, but experts agree that these de Blasio cards, with their insufficient background checks, are the perfect feeder document future terrorists would need to establish a fake identity to obtain housing, transportation and financing for their destructive plots. I agree with groups across the spectrum from law enforcement to the New York Civil Liberties Union that the de Blasio ID card scheme is a national security nightmare.
"Rather than foolishly spending taxpayer dollars on municipal ID cards, which jeopardizes the safety of all New Yorkers and Americans, New York City should be focused on devising a fair and equitable process for immigrants to come to our great state legally."
