Watkins Glen, N.Y., June 19—With one weekend left in USA Today’s online competition to decide “America’s Best NASCAR Track,” State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,I,C,-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,I,C-Corning) are urging area residents to vote for Watkins Glen International once a day, every day, until the contest closes on Monday, June 22, at noon.
The area legislators noted that WGI is currently running in 1st Place out of 20 nationwide finalists for the 2015 designation, but it’s been bumper to bumper with Martinsville Speedway (Ridgeway, VA) over the past week.
“Let’s finish strong this weekend, deliver our support and keep voting, every day, until Monday to help Watkins Glen International take the checkered flag as the best NASCAR track in America. It’s a great opportunity to put the Finger Lakes region on the national map once again and to show our pride in ‘The Glen’ as a favorite destination of visitors from across the country, a cornerstone of our leading tourism industry, and a driving force for charity, community service and economic development," O’Mara and Palmesano said in a joint statement.
The local legislators singled out “The Glen” for its unique contributions to American motorsports. WGI events annually generate over $200 million in economic activity across the region and account for more than 2,000 local jobs. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend in August is one of New York’s largest sporting events and attracts fans from all 50 states, as well as 16 different countries.
According to USA Today, voters are allowed to vote once every 24 hours from every Internet-capable device they have.
