Release: Avella Announces Opening of 11th Avenue

(QUEENS, NY) Today, State Senator Tony Avella announced that 11th Avenue in College Point will be reopened to the public Friday after months of construction to repair sewer pipes.

The stretch of roadway between 130th and 132nd Streets has been closed to residents for more than a year as the City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) made improvements to the sewer system for residents along 11th Avenue and to the Tallman Island Water Pollution Control Plant. When the project began, DEP anticipated the work to be completed by the fall of 2014, but the opening of the roadway was pushed back by several setbacks in the process.

Senator Avella has been working with DEP to ensure the project has a minimal impact on homeowners as the agency wraps up the remaining construction. Today, after months of delays, DEP officials finally informed Senator Avella that the roadway will be completely reopened to all traffic tomorrow, May 8th.

“The closure of 11th Avenue has caused a headache for the residents of College Point for far too long. While I am glad that DEP took initiative in installing a new sewer system for the community, the project created a serious eyesore for residents in the surrounding area and led to significant traffic problems as drivers were forced to bypass the work being done for more than a year. Today, I am thrilled to be able to announce that, as of tomorrow, 11th Avenue will finally be fully accessible once again. It is about time that the road be reopened to the people of College Point,” said Senator Avella.
