SEN. ESPAILLAT SLAMS SEN. GOP PROPOSAL TO CUT TENANT PROTECTIONS
March 22, 2016
State Senator Adriano Espaillat (D-Manhattan/Bronx) said: "Tenant harassment is rampant, as are illegal rent increases on stabilized units. We clearly need a strong Tenant Protection Unit (TPU), yet the Senate Republican's One-House Budget proposal cuts funding to the TPU. This proposal is 180 degrees out of sync with tenants' needs. We must increase funding to the TPU, so more tenants can be protected through proactive investigations into unscrupulous landlords."
Background:
16 members of Senate signed on to a letter authored by Espaillat requesting a funding increase for theTPU to $15 million.
The Senate One-House budget resolution "denies funding for the Tenant Protection Unit": http://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/resolutions/2015/r4330
The TPU has recovered almost 50,000 rent regulated units, returning them to rent stabilization rolls: http://www.nyshcr.org/Rent/TenantProtectionUnit/tpu-units-and-initiatives.htm
