Tarrytown, NY - Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins was honored by the Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics at the group’s Annual Richard P. Biondi Corporate Recognition Awards Breakfast at the Westchester Marriott last Friday.
The Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics, or IAHD, provides an expansive array of supportive services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Since 1957, the group has tirelessly advocated on behalf of these individuals and has committed to providing them with assistance in supportive living communities, helping them reach their full potential, and working with them to ensure they make the best possible choices and lead fulfilling, enriched lives.
The organization honored three community leaders who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities throughout Westchester. Honorees included Senator Stewart-Cousins, Greyston Bakery President and CEO Mike Brady, and El Centro Hispano Executive Director Isabel E. Villar.
Senator Stewart-Cousins was honored for her strong commitment to fighting on behalf of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the State Legislature. Senator Stewart-Cousins fought for a State Budget that increases spending for the Office of Persons With Developmental Disabilities to over $4.2 billion, which represents a 4.3% increase over last year’s budget.
“One of the core tenets of IAHD’s philosophy is that everyone has an enormous and intrinsic potential for growth, success, and happiness, no matter what their level of ability or disability may be, and that everyone is fundamentally entitled to the same respect, dignity, and opportunities as everyone else,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “When I worked in City Government, I created an internship program for the disabled. As a County Legislator, I authored and helped pass legislation that created the Human Rights Commission, which protects people with disabilities. Today, I employ a cleaning crew from Crystal Blue in Yonkers at my office , and most of the crew members receive support from IAHD. They offer the best quality work I could ask for, and I’m proud and grateful to use their services. I will always do everything I can to ensure members of the disabled community have access to the resources they need – and I look forward to working with IAHD well into the future to accomplish this goal.”
