State Announces Correction Officer Trainee Exam

ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean), in conjunction with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, has announced a new exam for correction officer trainees.

The new examination for correction officer trainees will be held on April 9, 2016 and the deadline to file to participate will be February 24, 2016.

Correction officer positions are located throughout the state in various correctional facilities. Correction officers are responsible for the custody and security, as well as the safety of criminal offenders. New correction officers work with experienced officers to supervise the movement and activities of inmates, make periodic rounds of assigned areas, conduct searches for contraband, maintain order within the facility, and prepare reports as necessary. Correction officers have a high degree of responsibility and are required to perform an array of duties.

“Correction officers are invaluable law enforcement professionals. These officers are compensated at very competitive salaries. I encourage qualified residents who are willing to accept the responsibilities of a correction officer to complete the online application as soon as possible,” said Senator Young.

The salary for a correction officer trainee is currently $40,590 and after successfully completing the one-year a traineeship, the salary increases to $48,889 per year.
