AMEDORE BILL TO GIVE VETERANS EASIER ACCESS TO INFORMATION ABOUT SERVICES SIGNED INTO LAW
October 3, 2016
Senator George Amedore today announced that Governor Cuomo has signed his legislation (S.7894) to make it easier for veterans and their family members to access information about vital programs and services available from the state and federal governments.
The new law requires the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs to develop, operate and maintain a mobile application to provide information about services for veterans that are provided by the Division, other state agencies, the federal government, and other organizations. Services to be listed on the mobile application include educational and job benefits, tuition assistance programs, survivor benefits, information about real property tax exemptions, as well as health and mental health referrals.
“Taking care of our veterans is a top priority, and that includes making sure they, as well as their family and loved ones, have up to date information about programs, services and benefits. As technology develops, it gives us another avenue to distribute this type of information. A mobile app that provides information from all levels of government at the touch of a finger will benefit our veterans and their families, who often don’t know where to turn to find out about the types of services they are entitled to. I want to thank Assemblyman Blake for his partnership on this issue, and thank Governor Cuomo for seeing the importance of this bill and signing it into law,” said Senator George Amedore.
The measure passed both houses of the Legislature with unanimous support earlier this year. It becomes Chapter 358 of the Laws of 2016.
