AMEDORE BILL TO NAME GREENE COUNTY HIGHWAY AFTER BELOVED PUBLIC SERVANT MOVES THROUGH SENATE

The New York State Senate today passed Senator Amedore’s legislation (S.7390) that would designate a portion of State Route 23 in the towns of Ashland and Windham in Greene County as the “Wayne C. Speenburgh Memorial Highway.”

The portion of highway to be designated begins at the intersection of Route 23 and Old Road in the town of Windham and runs west to the intersection of Route 23 and N. Settlement Road in the town of Ashland.

“Wayne Speenburgh was a giant in Greene County, and his loss is still sorely felt by so many in the communities that he served and loved,” said Senator Amedore. “From his military service, to his volunteerism in the community, and his time serving in public office, Wayne Speenburgh touched the lives of so many and dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for his neighbors throughout Greene County. I was proud to know him and call him a friend, and I can think of no better way to ensure his legacy is honored and remembered.”

Wayne Speenburgh passed away on September 17, 2015 at 71 years of age after a long illness. An Army Veteran, he served his nation during the Vietnam War. He served as Postmaster of the Coxsackie Post Office from 1970-2000. He was elected to the County Legislature in 2004, and was elected Chairman in 2007, a position he held until his illness forced him to step down.

He also served in community in many other capacities, including as a member of the VFW and American Legion of Catskill and Coxsackie, as a coach and official for several sports leagues, and head of the Coxsackie Community Playground and the Coxsackie Food Pantry.

The bill was passed unanimously by the Senate and was sent to the Assembly, where it is sponsored by Assemblyman Peter Lopez.
