SENATOR AMEDORE VOTES TO ESTABLISH TERM LIMITS FOR LEGISLATIVE LEADERS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS
January 12, 2016
Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Amedore to establish term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs advanced through the New York State Senate today.
The bill (S.2722B) imposes an eight year limit for any member of the legislature to serve as Temporary President of the Senate, Speaker of the Assembly, Minority Leader of the Senate, Minority Leader of the Assembly, or as the Chairman of a legislative committee.
“Establishing term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs will establish a more well-rounded, quality Legislature. It will empower more members of the Legislature, leading to a more representative government that will better serve all New Yorkers,” said Senator Amedore.
The Senate has already voluntarily adopted term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs under their internal rules, but the Assembly has yet to do so. This legislation would establish the term limits in law for both the Senate, and the Assembly.
Senator Amedore is also the sponsor of separate legislation (S.3808) that would impose term limits for members of the New York State Senate and Assembly. Under the bill, members of the Legislature would be ineligible to serve more than six two-year terms in the Assembly and the Senate.
“New voices and ideas will help to keep our government innovative and responsive to the people, while bringing fresh perspective and solutions to the issues that plague our state,” said Senator Amedore.
The bill was sent to the Assembly.
