STATEMENT FROM STATE SENATOR GEORGE AMEDORE
June 22, 2016
Last week, the Legislature took action on a package of bills aimed at helping to address the heroin crisis we are seeing in communities all throughout the state. The bills, which were signed into law by the Governor today, take a comprehensive, ground-up approach to increase education and prevention efforts, make treatment more affordable and accessible to those who need it, and make a strong investment in recovery programs and services.
Many of the components of the bills signed today are recommendations made by the Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction after travelling the state to gather input on the most effective ways to address the addiction issues we are facing here in New York. As a co-Chair of the Task Force, I am proud of what we have accomplished, as these solutions are going to bring real relief to so many New Yorkers. Our work will continue, however, because there is still more to be done.
But this is a strong, solid step in our efforts and establishes New York as a leader in the fight to help those who are struggling with addiction, as well as their family and loved ones who are often overwhelmed trying to navigate the system and get their loved ones the services they need.
