With October being breast cancer awareness month, Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) is informing residents about services that are available to help diagnose, treat and support women with breast cancer.
A number of local organizations provide support services to those affected by breast cancer, as well as information and other resources on preventing and fighting breast cancer. They can be reached at:
- Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition at www.greatneckbcc.org;·
- Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer at www.manhassetbreastcancer.org or 516-627-2410;·
- The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at breast-cancer.adelphi.edu or 1-800-877-8077;·
- 1 in 9, The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition at www.1in9.org or 516-374-3190.
Information on breast cancer screenings and support services can also be obtained by contacting the New York State Department of Health at 1-866-442-2262.
Additionally, New York State launched a new breast cancer “textline” earlier this year to help women find access to nearby breast cancer screenings. To use the service, residents should text “get screened” from their cell phones to 81336. After providing their zip code, the service will reply with a message containing nearby screening locations that offer extended hours.
Senator Martins regularly sponsors breast cancer screening programs throughout his Senate district. Information about upcoming screening programs can be obtained by calling Senator Martins’ office at 516-746-5924.
