Senator Martins Joins Governor Cuomo in Opposing EPA’s Plan for Additional Dumping in Long Island Sound

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently joined with Governor Andrew Cuomo in opposing the federal government’s plan to allow additional dumping in the Long Island Sound.  

     Senator Martins was part of a bipartisan coalition of state and local lawmakers who demanded that the federal government abandon the proposal, which would allow for expanded dumping of dredged material into portions of the Long Island Sound.  Some of this material contains substances such as pesticides, lead and mercury which are harmful to marine life and the ecosystem.

     "The federal government has unfortunately forgotten the lesson that we don't inherit the land from our parents, we borrow it from our children.  It is our collective responsibility to make things better not worse.  This is especially true when it comes to protecting a vital natural resource like the Long Island Sound.  The only thing the federal government should dump into the Long Island Sound is more money to continue cleaning it up," said Senator Martins.
