Senator Martins Provides State Grant to Enhance Children’s Programming at Westbury Library

    Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that he has secured $10,000 in state grant funding for the Westbury Library to enhance the educational services it provides to local children. 

    The Library will be using the funds to create a new, innovative program that will teach children about horticulture and business by letting them manage a garden “from seed to selling.”  Under the guidance of a qualified instructor, children will plant and tend a “Children’s Garden” in raised beds built in wooden planters at the Children’s Library.  Once the produce is fully grown and harvested, the children will sell it at a fresh farm stand in the Library. 

    “Westbury Library’s ‘Children’s Garden’ is an interactive, hands-on tool that will help children learn about science, economics and responsibility in a fun way.  I’m pleased to support this very creative educational program,” said Senator Martins.      

    "The staff and board of the Children's Library are always looking for innovative ways to get kids excited about learning, particularly about nature.  We think this project will be very exciting for children and we are grateful to have received funding from Senator Martins for the Children's Garden," said Westbury Library Director Cathleen Merenda.
