ALBANY, 05/03/16 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation renaming a portion of New York State Route 357 in Delaware County in honor of United States Marine Corps Corporal Nicholas K. Uzenski. The bill (S.6955) sponsored by Senator James L. Seward pays tribute to the decorated young patriot who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
“Every man and woman who dons a United States military uniform sacrifices for our nation and our way of life,” said Senator Seward. “Corporal Uzenski made the ultimate sacrifice and we owe it to him and his family to keep his memory alive.”
Corporal Nickolas K. Uzenski, 21, of Franklin, New York, died Jaunuary 11, 2010 in Helmond Province, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when his unit was ambushed during a reconnaissance mission. Corporal Uzenski and two other marines were killed during the mission, however, their heroic actions were credited with saving the rest of their team.
Corporal Uzenski was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the NATO International Security Assistance Service Medal, the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Purple Heart.
Senator Seward’s bill designates the portion of New York State Route 357 from the intersection with State Route 28 in the town Franklin to the Franklin-Sidney town line as the “Corporal Nicholas K. Uzenski Memorial Highway”.
“Memorial highways, parks, and other landmarks serve as fitting tributes to the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our freedoms. Each time we see a veteran’s name on a sign, we should think of that individual’s valor and say thank you. Corporal Uzenski served with bravery, courage, and unwavering allegiance to his country and his fellow soldiers and is highly deserving of this special tribute,” Seward added.
The special highway designation was requested by the Town of Franklin.
Companion legislation (A.9556) sponsored by Assemblyman Clifford Crouch has been introduced in the state assembly.
