ANDES, 08/13/16 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined in the dedication of the historic Andes Train Depot and announced a $75,000 state grant he secured to help with restoration costs.
“The Town of Andes is a picture perfect example of upstate New York life with a rich history and traditions all its own,” said Senator Seward. “The historic Andes Train Depot is a treasured piece of the town’s past and a gateway to the Andes Rail trail – a key component of the town’s future. The newly renovated depot will enhance the quality of life for residents and offer tourists another reason to visit Andes and the Catskills.”
The capital funding secured by Senator Seward through the State and Municipal Facilities Program has been used to help fund the restoration of the Delaware and Northern Railroad Depot building which was originally built in 1907 as part of the railroad branch that served Andes. The depot is now the starting point of the Andes Rail Trail.
Town of Andes Supervisor Wayland Gladstone said, “Senator Seward has been a strong supporter of this project from the start. We appreciate his advocacy and the state’s investment in Andes’ history and future.”
Former Town of Andes Supervisor Martin Donnelly, who helped spearhead the depot restoration, said, “The reconstructed train depot will help promote, protect and preserve the history of Andes and its people. Senator Seward’s assistance has helped us write a new chapter as we reinvent a community hub that is a source of pride for all.”
“It is vital that we protect and nurture our history for future generations to learn from and enjoy. The Andes Train Depot will fulfill that undertaking and serve as a focal point in Andes for generations to come,” Senator Seward concluded.
