December 21, 2016
Bronx, NY – In celebration of Christmas, State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), and Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj (D-Bronx), hosted their annual tree lightings on Thursday.
Community leaders, business owners, and families enjoyed hot cocoa, holiday treats, music, gift bags and even a special appearance by Santa Claus.
The festivities began at Rudy Macina Peace Plaza, where a dazzling Christmas tree lit up the neighborhood. Attendees placed ornaments on the tree and then joined in singing Christmas carols with the students from P.S. 83, P.S. 105, and the organization, Music with a Message. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto was in attendance as well.
After the first lighting, Santa Claus and the children continued with a procession in a horse-drawn carriage traveling to the next tree lighting at Morris Park Avenue and Haight Avenue.
“I am thrilled to host this annual tree lighting, which has become a long-standing tradition for our community. During this joyous time we again created cherished memories with one another,” said Senator Jeff Klein. “As 2016 draws to a close, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and a new year filled with good health.”
"I am overjoyed that the community, parents and children came together to celebrate this tradition, despite the cold weather. This is exactly what the holiday season is all about," said Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj.
The following evening, Senator Klein along with Assemblyman Crespo, Councilman Rafael Salamanca, and Community Board # 2 hosted a tree lighting in Hunts Point at Corporal Walter J. Fufido Square. After the lighting, children enjoyed music, arts and crafts, and holiday treats in the Hunts Point Recreation Center.
