Bronx - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), Councilman James Vacca, Center for Educational Innovation - Public Education Association, and the Throggs Neck Residents Council celebrated the official opening of the Throggs Neck Houses’ first library on Wednesday.
“The new library, which has both an adult and a children section, will help foster parental engagement. This is a great opportunity for both parents and children to enjoy quality time together, while children continue to learn outside of the classroom. Our children need all the resources and support they can get, and I thank Monique Johnson for her tireless commitment to the families of Throggs Neck Houses,” said Senator Jeff Klein.
Senator Klein also sponsors a summer reading program, which promotes literacy and learning. Participating students who complete the reading requirements will receive an “Excellence in Reading” certificate. For more information, visit klein.nysenate.gov.
“As a former educator I've always encouraged reading as the gateway to knowledge and the path to self improvement. The Throggs Neck Residents Council and its president, Monique Johnson, by creating this library have done a great service for the youth and adults of this community to enjoy for years to come,” said Assemblyman Mike Benedetto.
“This library is for the community, which is our pulse . We want everyone to feel the power of learning and come to the library,” said Monique Johnson, president of Throggs Neck Residents Council.
“I was so touched to see the looks on their children’s faces when they saw their new library. The children were excited to see the variety of books that they can take home and read. I would like to thank Books for Kids Foundation for their help,” said Carl Vinci, Director of Student Support Services & Project BOOST, Center for Educational Innovation – Public Education Association.
