New York Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is again joining Long Island Cares for its annual Legislature Pet Food Drive Challenge. Through this effort, the organization is working to collect pet supplies to help stock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to ensure that Long Island families in need are able to care for their pets.
Baxter’s Pet Pantry was created by Long Island Cares in 2009, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.
As part of the pet food drive, Senator Flanagan’s office will serve as a collection site for Long Island Cares through Friday, April 29th. Residents can drop off pet supply donations at Senator Flanagan’s Smithtown district office, which is located at 260 Middle Country Road, during normal business hours.
Long Island Cares accepts donations for all types of family pets including dogs, cats, fish, birds and others. The organization has stated that its most needed pet items are:
- 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food
- Canned food for dogs and cats
- Dog and Cat Treats
- Collars and Leashes
- Bird Seed
- Fish Food
- Cat Litter
- Small New Toys
Long Island Cares requests that all pet food be unopened and in its original packaging.
“This pet food drive builds on the efforts of the men and women of Long Island Cares and I am proud to join them in their ongoing work to help families in need. In many homes in our area, pets are a source of comfort to kids and adults alike and are an important part of the family. Baxter’s Pet Pantry helps bring assistance directly to those who may need a little help and allows families to care for all of their beloved pets,” stated Senator Flanagan.
