- Prostate Cancer Screening
Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and the Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program are once again joining together to provide men throughout our community with free prostate screenings.
The free exams, which will coincide with National Prostate Cancer Awareness month, will be available from Monday, September 19th through Thursday, September 22nd at the Stony Brook Urology office located in Suite 500 at 24 Research Way in Setauket.
All examinations are free and conducted under the direction of Medical Director Howard L. Adler, MD, FACS.
Informed consent testing and examinations are available for men over the age of 50, and for men 40 years of age and over who have a family history of prostate cancer or other risk factors. Residents who wish to take advantage of this free program are urged to call HealthConnect at 631-444-4000 as soon as possible to register for an appointment.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men affecting about 1 in every 5 men. The ACS estimates that in this year alone over 180,900 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and over 26,120 men will die of the disease. In total, prostate cancer accounts for about 8% of cancer-related deaths in men.
For those at risk, annual screenings maybe a very effective tool in early detection and, in conjunction with the proper medical treatment, may significantly improve a person’s chances of long-term survival.
“Prostate cancer, if discovered early on, is treatable so it is vital that every man follows the medical criteria to protect themselves. The staff of Stony Brook University’s Prostate Care Program have made it their mission to make it more convenient for men in our area to get screened, and I am happy to be working with them again this year,” stated Senator Flanagan.
