Senator Peralta applauds Board of Regents for allowing undocumented New Yorkers apply for teacher certifications
February 25, 2016
Statement from State Senator Jose Peralta (D-Queens) regarding the decision by the New York State Board of Regents to allow undocumented New Yorkers apply for teacher certifications and more than 50 professional licenses.
“This is a marvelous move by State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and the New York State Board of Regents. As the prime sponsor of the New York State DREAM Act, it is refreshing to know that the Board will allow hardworking, undocumented New Yorkers the ability to apply for teacher certifications, and more than 50 professional licenses. In doing this, the State is righting a wrong. This action will no doubt increase the quality of our education system, as well as provide additional job opportunities for immigrant-professionals who already happen to pay income taxes in New York State. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”
