Addabbo, Miller Fall Recycling Event Takes in Thousands of Pounds of Potential Waste

Howard Beach, NY (October 11, 2016) After another successful recycling fair held last month in Woodhaven, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblyman Mike Miller hauled in several tons of electronics, paper and household goods to be properly and safely recycled.

Addabbo and Miller hosted their annual Fall Recycling Event September 25 at the Forest Park Bandshell, welcoming nearly 1,000 cars as residents came to drop off unwanted items. The United War Veterans Council took in two trucks full of clothing, books, furniture, toys, appliances and other household goods to be donated, while nearly four tons of paper was collected for secure shredding and more than 17 tons of potentially hazardous electronic waste was saved from entering landfills and harming the environment.

The September event marked Addabbo’s third recycling fair this year, hosting a Spring event at Forest Park in April as well as an electronics recycling event in Rockaway earlier in September.

“Every year that I continue to sponsor free recycling events for my constituents, I am pleased with the increase in popularity time after time,” said Addabbo. “The growing number of residents who participate in these events speaks to the mounting awareness for the safety of our environment and how throwing paper, household items and electronics into garbage pails, rather than properly recycling them, can cause unnecessary and irreversible damage to the earth. In January, a new city law was enacted prohibiting homeowners from throwing away electronics with their regular garbage, and my recycling events held throughout the year offer New Yorkers a convenient way to legally dispose of their e-waste without the hassle of having to figure out where and how to do so. I am grateful to see such a high level of participation from the community and extend my thanks to the Parks Department for once again assisting with another successful recycling event.”

“These recycling events truly highlight the commitment of our community to protect and preserve our environment,” said Assemblyman Miller. “Given new policies with Sanitation, our recycling events have become vital to all those individuals who cannot go to a DSNY drop-off location with their electronics. The volume of people who took part in the event was astounding, as we had cars backing up to Myrtle Avenue from the Forest Park Bandshell. I look forward to continuously working with Senator Addabbo on many more recycling events and I thank everyone who participated in making this one a success.”

The Senator also thanked GCOP, CERT, the 102nd Precinct, Boy Scout Troop 139 and Boy Scout Troop 588 for their help with making sure the event ran smoothly.

Addabbo and Miller are planning another recycling event to be held in April, collecting electronics, household items and personal documents to be shredded and securely disposed of.
