State Senator Joseph Griffo announces that he is again accepting applications for The New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators annual academic and athletic scholarships. The Conference is awarding four $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded June 6 at a ceremony during its annual Legislative Conference Day.
The completed applications must be returned to Senator Griffo's office by Wednesday, April 6.
“Too many of our ambitious and hard-working youths may be discouraged from attending college because they can’t afford it," Griffo said. "But for those students who have the desire and drive to pursue a higher education, our Conference is proud to offer a scholarship that can help lessen the expense of achieving their goals."
Griffo said that applicants for the scholarship should be New York State residents that are current college students, or are high school seniors planning on entering college. Applicants should have a cumulative grade point average of 85 and over; have good conduct and demonstrate the dedication to pursue a higher education degree; be active in community service and extracurricular activities; and demonstrate financial need. Scholarship recipients will be invited to Albany to receive their scholarship awards in June.
The Conference is a bipartisan organization of New York State Assembly and Senate members who actively promote and celebrate the state’s Italian-American community. The conference’s mission is to highlight Italian-American contributions to the State in all aspects of society, including literature, the arts, architecture, and politics, and to work to dispel negative stereotypes of Italian-Americans.
Area students may request an application by contacting Griffo’s office at (315) 793-9072, or by emailing the Senator at griffo@nysenate.gov.
