New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio has announced that Governor Cuomo signed into law Senate Bill S.7160, which he co-sponsored. The new law expands pension credit for veterans and will allow honorably discharged service members, with five years of existing public pension credit, to obtain three years of service credit for their military service during times of peace. This law honors those who have bravely served our nation and encourages them to return to New York and continue their public service as teachers, firefighters, police officers, municipal and state employees.
“We have no greater obligation than to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our Nation, whether in times of peace or in times of war,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Just as our veterans recognized their duty to honor and serve their Country, we too must recognize our duty as Americans to honor the profound sacrifices they made so that we can live our lives in freedom.”
“This measure, which I proudly supported, reaffirms our commitment to those who put their lives on the line for the safety and security of our State and Nation. As State Senator, I will continue my aggressive efforts to support our veterans and their families,” concluded Senator Nozzolio.
The new law takes effect immediately and expands upon an existing program available only to veterans who served in certain combat zones during certain periods of time.
