New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio has announced that the State Senate recently enacted Senate Bill S.7160, which will provide an expanded pension credit for veterans. The bill would allow honorably discharged service members with five years of existing public pension credit to obtain three years of service credit for their military service during times of peace. This legislation honors those who have bravely served our nation and encourages them to return to New York and continue their public service as teachers, firefighters, police officers, municipal and state employees.
“We have no greater obligation than to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our Nation, whether in times of peace or in times of war,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Just as our veterans recognized their duty to honor and serve their Country, we too must recognize our duty as Americans to honor the profound sacrifices they made so that we could live our lives in freedom.”
“This legislation reaffirms our commitment to those who put their lives on the line for the safety and security of our State and Nation. As State Senator, I will continue my aggressive efforts to support our veterans and their families,” concluded Senator Nozzolio.
The Senate had enacted this important measure for the third time, and it has been vetoed twice by Governor Cuomo. The measure awaits action by the New York State Assembly.
