State funding helps offset lost tax revenues for Cayuga and Seneca Counties
New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio announced that the recently enacted 2016-2017 State Budget once again includes funding to help reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers caused by the refusal of the Cayuga Indians to pay their school and local property taxes. Senator Nozzolio fought to secure over $400,000 in the New York State Budget that will help to offset the unpaid property taxes on land that is owned by individual Cayuga Indians.
"It is my pleasure to announce that I have been successful in my efforts to offset the financial burden on local taxpayers created by the Cayuga Indians refusal to pay their property taxes. In addition, I will continue to do everything in my power to push for the fair and equitable collection of these unpaid property taxes, said Senator Nozzolio. "It is important to note that this funding does not release the Cayuga Indians from their financial obligations to Cayuga and Seneca counties. It does, however, help to reduce the financial impact on local property owners," continued Senator Nozzolio.
"As the State Senator representing Cayuga and Seneca counties, I am proud to have secured nearly $3.5 million over the last three years to eliminate this unfair financial burden on the Cayuga and Seneca County taxpayers. As a lifelong resident of Seneca County, I remain firmly committed to doing everything I can to protect our local, hardworking taxpayers from this inequity and will continue my efforts to see that the Cayuga Indians pay their fair share of taxes," concluded Senator Mike Nozzolio.
