Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announces the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is in the process of recruiting correction officers. As part of the effort, the NY State Department of Civil Service will administer a new examination for those interested in pursuing a career as a correction officer on April 9, 2016. The filing deadline for the exam is February 24, 2016.
“The Department is looking for the best candidates possible to serve in the various correctional facilities across New York,” said Gallivan, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections. “As a former New York State Trooper and Sheriff, I know that being a correction officer is a challenging, but rewarding job. I encourage men and women interested in serving their community to take the exam.”
Correction officers are responsible for the custody, security, safety and well-being of criminal offenders and must supervise their movement and activities while maintaining order within the correctional facility. A correction officer Trainee’s starting salary is currently $40,590 per year. After six months, the salary increases to $42,695. After successful completion of the one-year traineeship, the salary increases to $48,889 per year.
Interested persons may apply on-line or download exam information and applications at the Department of Civil Service website at www.cs.ny.gov/exams. Additional information about the position of correction officer is also available at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website at www.doccs.ny.gov.
As part of New York’s commitment to diversity in the workplace, women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
