Senator Gallivan Announces Safety Improvements to be Made at Town of Sheldon Intersection

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) says the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to a series of safety modifications at the intersection of Route 77 and Perry Road in the Town of Sheldon.  The changes are intended to reduce the number of accidents at the intersection and follow a DOT review of the highway. 

“I asked the DOT to take a closer look at the intersection after Sheldon Supervisor Brian Becker raised concerns about the number of accidents there,” Gallivan said.  “The DOT review identified a pattern of accidents over a three-year period and I’m glad to hear that steps will now be taken to improve safety at the intersection.” 

DOT plans to install dual 48-inch stop signs, the largest available, on each side of Perry Road as it approaches Route 77.  The ‘Stop Ahead’ warning assembly currently in place along westbound Perry Road will also be relocated to comply with current posting standards.  The DOT will also narrow the Perry Road approaches, reducing them from four lanes to two.  By removing the right lanes, the stop signs can be moved closer to the travel lane and be more visible to motorists.

“I am confident these changes will help reduce the number of accidents at this intersection and will make it safer for motorists,” Becker said.

The work is expected to be completed this construction season.
