CLEANING UP OUR COUNTIES: RITCHIE EVENTS HELP RECYCLE NEARLY 16,000 WASTE TIRES
May 25, 2016
Nearly 16,000 tires were eliminated from area yards and roadsides through State Senator Patty Ritchie’s free waste tire disposal events, held earlier this month in St. Lawrence and Oswego Counties.
To date Senator Ritchie’s free tire recycling events, which are made possible through special funding she secured, have been successful in recycling to nearly 60,000 waste tires throughout Central and Northern New York since 2013. Events are held not only to clean up our region, but also to reduce the risk of mosquito borne illnesses, as waste tires can act as breeding ground for the insects.”
“It’s estimated that one single waste tire can act as breeding ground for one million mosquitoes,” said Senator Ritchie.
“With increased concerns over diseases that can be carried by mosquitoes—including EEE, West Nile Virus, and in some parts of the country, the Zika virus—events like this are so critical when it comes to protecting public health. I would like to thank the local officials who helped to make these events possible, as well as all residents who pitched in and played a role in cleaning up our region.”
Senator Ritchie will host another round of free waste tire disposal events in Oswego County on June 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at transfer stations across the county:
Bristol Hill: 3125 State Route 3
Hannibal: 1167 County Route 7
Hastings: 1391 US Route 11
Oswego: 700 East Seneca St.
Pulaski: 100 County Route 2A
Residents are permitted to dispose of up to 12 tires with the usual fee being waived. Please note that tractor tires must be cut into four pieces.
