Nearly 6,000 Waste Tires Tossed at Ritchie-Sponsored Recycling Events

Local residents disposed of nearly 6,000 tires recently at free waste tire disposal events that took place last weekend across Oswego County. 

Since 2013, nearly 70,000 tires have been disposed of through Senator Ritchie’s events, which are made possible through special funding she secured to “Fight the Bite” by eliminating breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes, as well as clean up our region.

“Summer is here, and that means that in many places, mosquitoes are out in full force,” said Senator Ritchie.

“One of the most important steps we can take toward protecting ourselves is eliminating places—like waste tires—that hold standing water and offer mosquitoes a place to breed.  I would like to thank all who participated in my recent tire disposal events, as well as Oswego County for partnering with me on my continued efforts not only to tidy up our region, but also to ‘Fight the Bite.’”

Recent tire disposal events continue Senator Ritchie’s efforts to “Fight the Bite” and protect people in our region from mosquito-borne diseases like EEE, West Nile and the Zika virus. 

In the past, she has worked to secure vitally important funding to make possible increased awareness efforts—including those aimed at teaching young people about the dangers posed by mosquitoes—sponsored free vaccination clinics to protect horses, which are particularly susceptible to EEE and sponsored legislation that created the “21st Century Workgroup for Disease Elimination and Reduction,”  a special panel of state health experts who are seeking ways to push for a human vaccine for EEE and other diseases.
