RITCHIE: FREE TIRE DISPOSAL EVENTS TO TAKE PLACE MAY 14TH

State Senator Patty Ritchie is reminding St. Lawrence County residents that another round of free disposal events will take place on Saturday, May 14th in Gouverneur and Ogdensburg.

Recently, nearly 7,000 waste tires were eliminated from North Country lawns and roadsides as a result of free disposal events hosted by Senator Ritchie and  the St. Lawrence County Highway Department last month in Louisville and Canton.

So far, through Senator Ritchie’s free tire disposal events—which are being held in an effort to clean up our region and protect public health—nearly 40,000 waste tires throughout Central and Northern New York have been eliminated since 2013.

“With the warm weather comes opportunities for getting outside and cleaning up our yards and roadsides” said Senator Ritchie.

“I’m pleased that so many people in St. Lawrence County were recently able to chip in and eliminate tires at last month’s recycling events and am hopeful that on Saturday, more will take advantage of this opportunity to not only remove unsightly tires, but to safeguard the health of our communities.”

The events are being made possible through special funding secured by Senator Ritchie to help beautify our region, as well as fight deadly mosquito-borne illnesses.  It’s estimated that a single tire can act as breeding ground for as many one million mosquitoes, which can carry diseases like West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or “EEE.”

On May 14th, waste tires will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the following locations:

Ogdensburg: Transfer Station, 522 County Route 28A

Gouverneur: St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds, 133 Barney Street

Each household will be permitted to dispose of up to eight tires with the usual $15 fee being waived.  Please note, tires must be removed from rims and no tractor tires will be accepted.
