State Senator Patty Ritchie is encouraging St. Lawrence County residents to join in the effort to clean up the North Country and stop the spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes by taking part in her free waste tire disposal events.
Taking place on April 30th and May 14th, at the events residents will be permitted to dispose of up to 8 tires, with the usual $15 fee being waived.
“Waste tires aren’t just unsightly, they also have the potential to attract disease-carrying mosquitoes that can pose very serious threats to public health,” said Senator Ritchie.
“To date, my free waste tire disposal events have helped to eliminate more than 30,000 tires in our region since 2013. I’m hopeful that residents across the North Country will pitch in, and make these events part of their spring cleaning.”
The events are being made possible through special funding secured by Senator Ritchie to help beautify our region, as well as fight deadly mosquito-borne illnesses. It’s estimated that a single tire can act as breeding ground for as many one million mosquitoes, which can carry diseases like West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or “EEE.”
Waste tires will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the following locations:
Saturday April 30
Louisville: Town Highway Garage, 14810 State Highway 37
Canton: Human Resource Building, 80 State Highway 310
Saturday May 14th
Ogdensburg: Transfer Station, 522 County Route 28A
Gouverneur: St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds, 133 Barney Street
Each household will be permitted to dispose of up to eight tires free of charge. Please note, tires must be removed from rims and no tractor tires will be accepted.
