Ritchie Urges Federal Regulators to Approve Transfer of FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant

State Senator Patty Ritchie is calling on federal regulators to approve an application that would allow for the transfer of control of the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant from its current operator, Entergy to Exelon.

In a letter sent this week, Senator Ritchie urged the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve the transfer of control, a move that would help protect local jobs and the region’s economy. In August, Exelon announced that it would purchase FitzPatrick from Entergy.  Federal approval is needed to complete the transfer.

“Supporting the jobs of more than 600 hardworking men and women, FitzPatrick is one of largest employers in the region I represent.  In addition, the plant also generates $500 million per-year in economic activity,” said Senator Ritchie in her letter.

“A timely approval of the application for transfer of control of FizPatrick is critically important to making sure the plant’s dedicated employees can continue their careers and to ensuring Central New York continues to benefit from the tremendous economic boost provided by the plant.”

In addition, in her letter Senator Ritchie also pointed to the importance of FitzPatrick when it comes to meeting the state’s clean energy goals and ensuring that people across the state have access to reliable, safe and affordable power.
