Senator Rob Ortt (R,C,I – North Tonawanda) today announced Niagara University has been awarded $197,000 in state funding for the second phase of work on its Nursing Simulation Center. NU’s capital project is one of 30 at higher educational institutions across the state being financed through the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program (HECap).
“The programs, services and staff at Niagara University provide a catalyst for success for students,” said Senator Ortt. “The nursing simulation lab at the university enhances the current program, further enriches the educational experience for students, and prepares them for a fulfilling career upon graduation. This capital funding will allow NU to thrive in our local economy and become an even bigger draw for high quality students locally and nationwide.”
The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University said, “The Nursing Simulation Center opens the door to a multitude of opportunities for our students. It will expand our nursing program and enrich the lives of our students, and it will enhance Niagara's capacity to be a vibrant and contributing presence in the Buffalo-Niagara medical corridor. Additionally, this private-public partnership will help NU stay up to date with the latest technology, and carry on its mission to serve its students and community members.”
HECap is a program that provides matching grants to private colleges and universities for the construction of new facilities, or the rehabilitation and repair of existing facilities. The grants can also be utilized for any projects for targeted high priorities, including economic development, high technology, critical academic facilities, and urban renewal/historic preservation.
The Rochester Institute of Technology in Monroe County was also awarded a grant through the HECap program in the amount of $500,000. The money will be used to renovate the fourth floor of Institute Hall.
