Senator Persaud Announces April 29th Is New York State Arbor Day
April 29, 2016
(Brooklyn, NY) Senator Roxanne J. Persaud today announced that Friday, April 29 is Arbor Day in New York State. Arbor is from the Latin word arbor meaning trees. J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day back in 1872 to set aside a day for planting trees. Arbor Day encourages appreciation and conservation of trees by promoting awareness and recognition of the important roles they play in the environment and our everyday lives.
“Trees and flowers have co-evolved over fifteen million years and they provide the essentials for the foundation of life. New York’s forest and parks are filled with a colorful variety of different types of foliage and their beauty helps to draw tourist from across the globe. From New York’s city parks to vast forest, trees have been vital parts of our economy, nature and charm. Arbor Day reminds us to take the time to appreciate our beautiful state.” ~ Senator Roxanne J. Persaud
The woodlands of New York provide valuable resources in the form of lumber, clean air, natural wildlife habitats, and help attract tourists from all over the world. Some of the state’s oldest trees include the Alley Pond Giant of Queens and the Balmville Tree of Newburgh which predate the Revolutionary War. These and other ‘heritage trees’ have become state treasures and community landmarks that inspire conservationists and community members to care for them and all of New York’s forests.
Arbor Day is an opportunity for communities and organizations to enrich New Yorkers’ appreciation of trees by taking nature walks, enjoying state and urban parks, planting trees and learning about forestry. New York celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April. More Arbor Day activities include visiting one of New York State’s old growth trees, removing trash and debris from forested areas, visiting an arboretum or botanical garden, or donating to conservation groups that plant and maintain trees. Communities and schools often hold events and offer fieldtrips and activities to promote awareness.
