ALBANY, NY—State Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) released the following statement today in response to the Assembly’s passage of the revised ‘Tampon Tax’ bill:
“A tax on tampons is a tax on women, period. Repealing this out-of-touch law has been decades in the making and today, I am incredibly proud to announce that an agreement has been reached to be rid of it once and for all.
The amended version of the bill that passed in the State Assembly today is a one that has been agreed upon by the Senate and the Assembly and is expected to pass in the Senate in the coming days (A7555-A/ S7838). The change reflects the fact that all women are unique and as such, utilize a variety of essential feminine hygiene products, ensuring that as many women as possible will benefit from the measure.
Repealing this tax is decades overdue and by passing this legislation, we will be taking a monumental step forward in finally applying commonsense to our tax code. More importantly though, we are sending a message to New York’s women that their voices are being heard.
It is my hope that the Governor’s Office will recognize the significance of this legislation and sign it into law as soon as possible—New York’s women’s have bore the burden of this tax long enough.”
