SERINO CHIPS AWAY AT SATE’S OUT-OF-TOUCH TAX LAWS

Bill to Remove Tax on Feminine Hygiene Products Passes Senate

ALBANY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) today announced that her bill to finally exempt feminine hygiene products from the state sales and compensating use tax passed unanimously in the Senate.

“To consider that we exempt cupcakes and circus performances from the sales tax in New York State, but not sanitary napkins and tampons—products women depend on—is beyond comprehension,” said Senator Serino. "There has been a groundswell of support for this legislation since it was introduced and today, we send a strong message to New York’s women that they are being heard.”

The bill (S. 6726A) was introduced in the Senate by Serino in February and was recently amended to specifically exempt sanitary napkins and tampons from the tax.

“The Senate took a significant step forward today in not only relieving an undue burden on New York’s women, but in finally applying common sense to our out-of-touch tax laws. I thank my colleagues for recognizing the importance of this legislation and ensuring its passage this Session."
