SERINO: MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO INCREASE SAFETY AT RAIL CROSSINGS
May 23, 2016
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY— Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) released the following statement regarding the train/car accident in Poughkeepsie:
“While fatalities and accidents at highway-railroad grade crossings have fallen steadily across the nation, the number has actually risen here in New York. That is why earlier this week, with my support, the Senate took decisive action to improve safety at railroad crossings by passing two bills aimed at decreasing the number of hazardous vehicular accidents (S5238A and S3458B). One of these bills has already been sent to the Governor and with his statement today calling for action, it is my hope that he will make its signage a priority.
While thankfully no one was injured in today’s incident, over 200 people in the U.S. lost their lives in similar events last year. I urge my colleagues in the Assembly as well as the Executive to ensure that these bills become law as soon as possible.”
