SERINO RENEWS COMMITMENT TO BATTLE LYME DISEASE

Secures $600,000 in State Budget

ALBANY, NY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) today announced that the 2016-17 budget renews the state’s commitment to combat Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases (TBDs) by including $600,000 for education, prevention and research.

“In the Hudson Valley, almost everyone knows someone suffering the effects of Lyme or TBDs,” said Senator Serino. “While the diseases might not be known to that extent in other communities, they’re certainly beginning to spread across the state and eyes are really starting to open to the severity of Tick-Borne Diseases. If we want to prevent that spread and help those who are suffering, combatting Lyme and TBDs needs to be a priority each and every year.”

Serino continued, “This year, I am proud to announce that we have renewed our commitment to that battle by including another $600,000 in the State Budget.”

Last year Serino, who Chairs the Senate Taskforce on Lyme and TBDs, was able to successfully secure the same $600,000—an unprecedented funding commitment from the state to combat these issues. $90,000 of that funding was delivered directly to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook for critical research.

“It’s time to end Lyme and research and information is what we need to do that. With this year’s funding, the hope is that we can build on last year’s momentum, keep raising awareness and one day stop the spread of Lyme and TBDs,” concluded Senator Serino.
