SERINO: SILVER SENTENCING MUST SPARK ETHICS REFORM
ALBANY, NY—State Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) released the following statement regarding the sentencing of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver:
“Today, one the State’s most powerful leaders was sentenced to 12 years in prison for abusing his power and taking complete advantage of the public trust. Enough is enough. It’s time for real ethics reform that will put an end to the pervasive culture of corruption in Albany.
That starts with term limits and a requiring the forfeiture of public pensions by those found guilty of a felony. These pieces of legislation (S. 57 and S. 1923), of which I have long been a co-sponsor, are no-brainers and are measures that would without a doubt serve as deterrents for public corruption.
It is clear that New Yorkers have had enough. It is time to show them that they are being heard and that starts with putting an end to Albany’s corruption plague.”
