Yorktown pays tribute to Purple Heart heroes
July 27, 2016
YORKTOWN, NY - In 2013, when Senator Murphy served as a local councilman, Yorktown approved a resolution to become a Purple Heart Town. Earlier today, Senator Murphy joined Yorktown's local officials as well as members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart to unveil the new sign at the intersection of Route 202 and Route 118.
Senator Murphy said, "I was so proud to vote in support of the resolution to make Yorktown a Purple Heart Town and commend Yorktown's current board for upholding the values that come with this incredible distinction. Our veterans deserve this and I hope this sign will remind them, and all members of our community, of our commitment to those who have defended our freedoms both home and abroad."
As a Purple Heart Town, Yorktown now recognizes veterans who are recipients of the Purple heart Medal. It also acknowledges the commitment and sacrifices made by military service members and their families, including Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers, and it pledges to continue to honor and support their contributions.
Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace said, "This town's commitment to our servicemen and women never ceases to amaze me. As Supervisor, today marks one of my proudest days in office as we reinforce our dedication to the brave individuals who have protected our way of life. May God bless them, their families, and may He continue to watch over those serving today."
Yorktown Councilman Tom Diana said, "Our veterans are the backbone of our community. We should always take the time to salute them, recognize them and thank them for their service and sacrifice. Today marks just one more way for the Yorktown community to say thank you."
Yorktown Councilman Ed Lachterman said, "I want to thank the Military Order of the Purple Heart for working with the town to make this a reality. We are the land of the free because of the brave men and women who have put themselves in harms way to protect us. Becoming a Purple Heart Town is just one small way for us to acknowledge all they have done for us."
