For Immediate Release

Hauppauge, NY – New York State Senator Thomas Croci (R-C-I, Sayville), Senate Chair for the State Ethics Committee, as well as the Committee on Homeland Security, Veterans, and Military Affairs, announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislation to set term limits for leadership positions in both the state Senate and Assembly.

The bill (S.2722B) limits the leadership positions, including Majority Leader in the Senate and Speaker of the Assembly, to eight-year terms and also limits the number of years that a legislator can serve in the position of committee chair or party leader.

“This legislation is important to New York State because it is a step in the right direction to restoring New Yorkers’ faith in their government leadership.  Public trust is at the core of our democracy and limiting the terms of the leadership roles in the Senate and the Assembly ensures that the power held by these positions does not outweigh the responsibility to protect this public trust,” stated Senator Croci. “I am proud we have passed this bill in the Senate and I hope the Assembly will quickly pass this legislation in their house.”

This legislation, which has been passed several times by Senate Republicans, mirrors what has been in place in the Senate rules since 2009. The bill will next be sent to the Assembly.
