Hauppauge, NY – Senator Thomas Croci (R, C, I – Sayville) and the New York State Senate passed legislation (S5598) that would establish the new crime of inciting violence against a police officer. In recent years, there has been an increase in violent crimes committed against police officers and this measure would help prevent individuals from deliberately inciting violence targeting law enforcement by creating a new class D felony.
Senator Croci, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, said, “Our law enforcement officers have taken an oath to protect all of us and they put their lives on the line to keep us safe every single day. Strengthening laws to protect their safety so that they can return to their families at the end of each of their shifts is a great responsibility that I hope the Assembly and Governor will join with me in accomplishing.”
This legislation is a result of the input received during a series of public hearings held by the Senate Majority last year, which examined police safety and public protection in New York City and throughout the state.
The bill will be sent to the Assembly.
