(Queens, NY) Today, State Senator Tony Avella and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Queens Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Little Bay Park’s newly completed comfort station.
In 2004, then Councilmember Avella and former U.S. Representative Gary Ackerman secured funding through Mayor Bloomberg to install a comfort station and expand the parking lot of Little Bay Park. However, the groundbreaking did not commence until 2013 and development was met with an almost never ending set of delays.
Early last summer in 2015, Avella announced the completion of the parking lot, but expressed frustration about the pending status of the comfort station. The parking lot, however, which was originally supposed to hold 100 parking spaces, featured 204 spaces.
“If I had to limit my reaction to Little Bay Park’s finished comfort station to just one word, it would be, ‘FINALLY’. It was nothing short of surreal to find an article dated 2005 which announced this projects initial announcement. The completion of this comfort station marks the final chapter of Little Bay Park’s decade-in-the-making renovations, and it has been a worthwhile wait. These additional amenities were something the community really wanted and I trust that the park’s popularity will only increase this spring and summer as a result. I thank the Department of Parks and Recreation for seeing this project through and I thank the park-goers for their tried-and-true patience,” said State Senator Tony Avella.
